Eco Makeup Look – Casual Neutrals

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a beauty series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural makeup looks for everyday life.

It’s time for an Eco casual neutral makeup Look of the month when I use only natural non-toxic products to create it!

Once in awhile I need alone time to contemplate whatever is brewing on my brain or to get away from it!  😉  It’s hard to get a quiet alone time in the house with a toddler, so I head out for a walk.  Sometimes I really enjoy taking a stroll outside in a rain.  I’m not talking about heavy downpour, of course.  However, there is something extra calming and peaceful about walking in the soft drizzle of the rain or right after it.  The smells, the cloudy sky and darkened colours really set the mood for a relaxed walk.  This is the scenario I had on my mind while creating this casual neutral eco makeup look.

THE LOOK

When I’m heading out for a quiet walk, I’m not going to spend time putting on a lot of makeup, but I do want to look put together.  Nothing bright or distracting, just a casual swipe of colour here and there on the face.  When I was choosing colours for this casual eco makeup look I thought about how it always gets darker outside and everything gets a cast of cool tones from the grey clouds.  The tones of this makeup are neutral taupes on eyes, lips and cheeks, creating a monochromatic look.  I like monochromatic looks because there is no need to think which colours look good together, they will work for sure since they are from the same colour family.  Also neutral taupe colours are flattering on most skin tones, as long as you adjust the intensity of the colour to the darkness of the skin tone.

FACE

Choose a complexion product that is sheer and is just enough to make the skin look even toned without looking like you have any makeup on at all.  BB creams and tinted moisturizers are great for this.  No need for perfection – this is a casual look.  I used a liquid foundation, warmed it up in my hands and applied a very sheer layer mostly in the centre of the face.

TECHINIQUE – BLUSH CONTOURING

I love accentuating my already prominent Russian cheekbones. 🙂  Here is a great tip for when you want not only to have some colour on the cheeks but also define the bone structure of your cheekbones.  You don’t need to use special products if you are just doing a natural contouring effect, not the heavy contoured look.

Pick a blush that has earthy-pink or mauve tones.  Apply a bit on the brush.  I usually swirl the brush a few times on the blush surface to make sure I have a good and even amount on it.  Start the application on the outer part of the face, where the cheekbone connects to the ear.  Wherever you touch your brush first, that’s where the colour will be the darkest.  Bring the brush along the bottom part of cheekbones and slightly under, moving towards the middle of the face.  Blend the colour by going over it with the brush in circular motions, especially focusing on the apple of the cheek area.

EYES

Eyes were easy peasy using an eye-shadow stick that I love so much for its convenience.  I smudged a light taupe colour all over the eyelids, blended the edges in the crease and worked in a darker shade on the outer corner and that’s it!  I only needed a bit of colour on the eyes.  Plus mascara, of course!  Can’t leave the house without it unless you are blessed with thick black lashes. 🙂

LIPS

A swipe of a brown-pink lipgloss in a tone close the actual lip colour finishes the look.

PRODUCTS

Natural organic makeup products Klava Z Ottawa makeup artist used in creating the Eco Casual Neutral Makeup LookSappho Organics Liquid Foundation and Dalish Cosmetics Concealer – both are in my personal makeup bag and I have raved about them on multiple occasions in my blog.  Check out the Sweater Weather eco makeup look that have my reviews on these two products.

Mineral Fusion Blush in Airy.  A great blush with all kinds of skin nourishing ingredients in it and lot’s of “free” to be happy about.  Like parabens, artificial colors, fragrances, talc and gluten free.  It feels silky as it’s finely milled, which is a great plus in my books because a lot of mineral makeup out there feels a bit grainy and doesn’t go on as smooth.  It is also well pigmented and has a soft shimmer to it that adds a bit of glow to the skin.  The shade is muted brownish pink that works as a neutral universal colour.

100% Pure Dual Ended Eyestick in Champagne/Chocolate.  I got this one in my April Vegan Cuts Beauty Box and already did a review on this Eyestick in a different colour in my Eco February makeup look.  As for the colours – they are a beautiful light and dark duo, but I would’t call them champagne or chocolate.  They definitely have cool undertones and I haven’t see a lot (actually none) of greyish champagnes or chocolates out there.

Pacifica Naturals Mineral Mascara Aquarian in Abyss.  This is a standard black mascara that defines lashes for a natural look.  The formula promises lots of length, but I didn’t find it added much to mine.  The mascara has a silicone wand, which I’m not a bit fan of, but that’s personal preference.  It is water-resistant, which makes it stay on well for a long time, but also means that you need to put a bit of effort when taking it off.  I like the fact that it has lashes conditioning ingredients, like coconut oil because a lot of mascaras, especially water-resistant once, can dry out the lashes.

Bite Beauty Lush Fruit Lipgloss in Currant.  I have been curious about this Canadian brand for awhile!  It gets rave reviews and I was happy to have an excuse to try it out.  The colour is a sheer nude plumy pink that can go with just about anything!  Leaves lips feeling nourished with coconut, mango, and strawberry; infused with seven fruit oils.   These ingredients also make it smell and taste yummy!  It doesn’t feel sticky and looks juicy and wet on the lips.

GLAMMED UP VERSION OF THE LOOK

I added only two things, but you can see in this picture the instant impact that it has on the makeup.  I used the Chocolate colour of the Eyestick along the upper (thicker towards the outer corner) and lower lash line and smudged it for a softer finish.  Then I used a dark pink lip pencil to pop the lips a bit more and applied the same lipgloss overtop.  That’s it, you are ready to face the world in your casual neutral makeup look!

I hope this inspires you to try out natural toxin-free makeup and play with different looks.  And if you do, I would love to see it!  Don’t be shy, post your interpretation of this look here or on Instagram with a tag #EffortlessbyKlavaZ.

Natural Beauty Makeup Look – Eco February

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly beauty series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural makeup looks for everyday life.

It’s time for a Eco Natural Beauty Makeup Look of the month when I use only natural and/or organic products for creating it!

I love doing this as it gives me an excuse to play and explore more non-toxic beauty products and expand my eco makeup kit, which is a big goal for me this year. My everyday personal makeup bag is pretty much mostly green cosmetics, especially my complexion products, like powder and foundation. I figured since everything from our skin gets absorbed in our body, it’s important to have these products toxin-free. Plus it agrees better with my sensitive skin and it doesn’t make me break out.

I wrote all about how I became interested in natural cosmetics in my first Eco Look post.

For Eco February Makeup Look I partnered up with Louche Lily – a lovely online eco boutique carrying eco awesome products, specializing in skincare, body/care, makeup and accessories. The brands in her store are sourced from all around the world, with strong focus on Canada and the US, with utmost thought and care. The founder, Lyz Plant, is a talented makeup artist (and just the coolest girl that I can chat with endlessly) carefully selects all the products to make sure that they offer the highest quality ingredients for skin. This girl knows what she is talking about! The amount of research and personally trying out all the cosmetics before offering them in her store is astounding! She is a walking encyclopedia on all things toxic that shouldn’t be in our makeup products. I was super excited about her generous offer to play with her pro eco makeup kit!!! Needless to say, it was a kid in a candy store moment. I hope you enjoy this post and if you’re an aspiring beauty student going to one of the Riverside beauty schools, I have included some tips that you might be able to use 🙂

Eco February Makeup Look THE LOOK

Eco February Look was inspired by the cold frosted outside, of course! Cool tones are what I reach for during the winter the most, so that’s what I focused on creating this makeup as well. The soft sparkle of snow inspired the shimmery eye shadows all around the eyes. I wanted to create a look that has a hint of glam to it, to show that eco doesn’t have to mean very natural looking. That’s why I chose a brighter colour lip in a beautiful lavender pink for a fun pop of colour.

Klava Z, Ottawa makeup artist created natural beauty makeup with a shimmery brown eyes and pink lavender lips using only natural cosmetics. A fun collage of behind the scenes images from the photoshoot, styled outfit shots and model with beautiful makeup.

FACE

Since in the winter we do need a bit more coverage because the cool light outside is less forgiving I applied a creamy foundation all over and made sure that the skin is looking even-toned. I infused a soft pink flush on the cheeks with a creamy blush by applying it with my fingers and added a radiant glow to the cheekbones with a creamy highlighter, making sure that the blush and highlighter blend into each other.

EYES

I started by creating a pretty base of shimmery light ivory colour all over the lids using this very handy duo eye pencil that has light colour on one side and dark on the other. Then I turned around the eye pencil and applied the midtone brown shade in the outer corner going up towards the crease and slightly past it, so that when the models eyes are open you can see a bit of colour extending from her crease towards the brow. I also used this side of the eye pencil under the eye for a hint of pretty shine.

A brown eyeliner was used to create a very thin definition on the top and also in the bottom waterline.

TECHNIQUE TIP – EYE BRIGHTENING

Klava Z, makeup artist in Ottawa is showing how to do eye makeup and brighten the eyes on a model for her Natural Beauty Look Eco February

To bring more light to the eye and open it up a bit more in the middle, I applied a light shimmery colour eyeshadow right in the middle of the eyelid tapping it on with a flat brush for more intensity (as opposed to blending it in). Of course, I finished with a generous application of mascara (is there other way with mascara, really?).

This technique is such an easy and fast step that will help your eyes to catch extra light and bring a flattering sparkle to the eye. It’s all about small details in makeup, right? You can do this with any of your eye makeup and if you are in rush just use your finger to tap the eye shadow on the eyelid. If you would like to learn more techniques and become a pro at your own makeup then see me for a makeup lesson.

LIPS

Gorgeous shade of bright lavender-pink was swiped on the lips to give the whole look a brightening lift with a lovely pop of colour and take the makeup from the routine natural to a fresh pretty look.

PRODUCTS

The key products to achieving this look are the eye-shadows, cheek products and the lipstick, which I will provide my short reviews on as usual. However since I’m really focusing on introducing natural makeup products, I will list all the products I used.

Natural Makeup Products by Ilia, Vapour, Dalish and 100% Pure cosmetics used by Klava Z, Ottawa makeup artist, to create a Natural Beauty Makeup Look Eco February

100% Pure Dual-Ended Creamstick Eyeliner in Cotton & Silk. I always look for ways to simplify my makeup application and this eye pencil allows me to do just this! Double bonus for two gorgeous colours with pearly finish in one pencil! It’s so easy to use that you don’t need a brush and there is no mess from powder eyeshadows. Just apply this pencil where you want it, whether as an eye-liner or a shadow; and then blend the edges by patting them with your finger. It glides on creamy and smooth. If your skin is on the oily side I would recommend either wearing a primer or set with powder eyeshadow on top for more long wearing power.

100% Pure Eye Shadow Vanilla Sugar. A beautiful neutral eye shadow colour with sparkle, that is pigmented with fruit cosmetics.

ILIA Lipstick in Around The World. ILIA Lipstick combines organic ingredients with contemporary colors blended into a creamy and long lasting semi-matte finish. I love the selection of lipstick colours ILIA offers! This rose hue lipstick with a strong lavender undertone is one of those rare purple shade which can be worn by nearly everyone.

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Lovely. Lovely is a beautiful pink tone. Its rich color pigment has a long-lasting effect that gives a pretty flushed-cheek look. This shade is incredible for all skin tones as well. The creamy consistency of this cream blush blends beautifully and smoothly with the warmth of the fingers or a brush.

ILIA Cosmic Dancer Highlight. I’m all about highlighters, especially so natural looking as this one! It’s very discreet, giving the skin true glow without the shimmer. This subtle golden hued highlighter is great at adding dimension and vitality to the skin. The texture is a bit thick but easy to bend still.

100% Pure Eyebrow in Brunette

100% Pure Maracuja Oil Mascara Length & Separating in Black Tea

100% Pure Long Last Liner in Dark Cacao

Dalish Concealer C02. I have raved about this concealer here already.

Vapor Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation

Vapor Organic Beauty Stratus Instant Skin Perfector.

You can find all these natural beauties at Louche Lily Eco Beauty Boutique.

GLAMMED UP VERSION OF THE LOOK

Natural Beauty Eco Makeup Look created by Klava Z Ottawa makeup artist with shimmery brown and vanilla shades on the eyes, glowy skin and mulberry colour lipstick .

It’s so easy to amp up the glam of this look just by adding a deeper lipstick colour. I applied a mulberry colour lipstick right on top of the pink one that was already there. What a gorgeous and effortless look! It looks so great that I am going to have to do some more research on natural beauty products and look at websites like Waterlilies And Company!

Sweater Weather Eco Makeup Look

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly makeup series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural looks for everyday life. #EffortlessbyKlavaZ

This is a special edition of the Beauty Series that I’m extra excited about! Once a month I will be releasing a look that will be focused on using mostly or all eco beauty products. If you know me or you had a chance to read About Klava then you know how passionate I am about natural cosmetics! I blame my green ways on my 10 years of living in the beautiful West Coast of Canada, Victoria BC. Life is a bit less hectic there with a big focus on living consciously, honouring our natural environment and your body by avoid putting toxins in it.

I stepped on the path of natural wellness when my health wasn’t great and being motivated to get better and naturally curious I researched and read a lot about healthy lifestyle, nutrition and since I was a makeup artist, cosmetics as well. I was lovingly named “our hippie” by the MAC girls I worked together with at the store at the time. I was really shocked to learn how many toxic ingredients cosmetic companies add to their products! So I was eager to find alternative makeup and skincare that would perform well without the bad stuff in them. I know that there is still an impression that natural organic makeup products don’t work well, but natural makeup has progressed a long way since the original “crunchy” ways. Learning how to apply it by making your lashes fuller and more bold can be found by visiting travelexperta, enhancing your natural beauty and bringing out your facial features is a great confidence boost, you can use makeup creatively to express your style and show the world how beautiful you are.

Hopefully with my once a month green makeup look I can show you that there are many green products that work just as well and sometimes better then conventional cosmetics. Every month I discover new brands that produce beautiful eco clean makeup! A lot of them I found through my little (ahem, big) addiction called Instagram. 🙂 I’m slowly working towards my goal – a fully stocked eco kit with the best natural organic products in the market.

THE LOOK

Winter Beauty Eco Makeup look Before and After

This green beauty look is called Sweater Weather. It is inspired by the soft cool tones of winter, when snow makes all colours look slightly muted. When I put on my chunky knit sweater and my hat and feeling all cozy, I feel like adding a bit of lightness to my look, like crips winter air. I think that the combination of lilac and mauve tones worked well to convey that feeling. 🙂

Before I get to this look in details, I wanted to mention that I recently did a guest blog post on my friend’s blog for her wedding planning and styling company Toast Events. I blogged about winter specific makeup tricks and creating makeup looks for a special occasion like winter wedding. Check it out here.

Winter Beauty Makeup Look

HOW TO

EYES

Very often I start with the eyes and then do the rest of the face. I do so in case I have some fall outs from the eyeshadows under the eyes. This way I don’t have to redo my concealer or foundation. I can easily swipe them away and finish with the skin.

TECHNIQUE TIP – EYE SHADOW

The focus of my technique is the application of the eyeshadow for this look. I used a slightly frosted lilac eyeshadow and applied it with a flat firm eyeshadow shader brush all over the eyelids, in the inner corners and all over under the eyes as well. I chose a firm brush because I really wanted the light colour to show up and brighten up the eye with its lilac shine. I like to switch it up and use light colours instead of dark to line the bottom of the eyes. It makes the eyes stand out in a different way, it’s sort of has this airy effect. This light shade of lilac looks good with most eye-colours and flatters most skin tones, but dark. Somebody with a darker skin tone can still wear it, but would have to use this colour very sparingly, blended with other colours to avoid looking too stark of a contrast.

Then I used a small pointy pencil brush and applied a taupe colour in the inner corner of the eyes and blended its edges with a clean soft and fluffy blending brush for a washed out effect. I only wanted a hint of colour in the outer corner to ground the lilac colour a bit, that’s why I blended it well with a clean brush.

In the middle of this week I will be posting the video of this technique tip on my Instagram @KlavaZ.Makeup.

SKIN

I applied a creamy foundation all over the face and blended it in with my fingers until it looked like my model’s actual skin just slightly perfected. The foundation I used didn’t need any setting with powder on model’s skin. To bring subtle colour to the cheeks I barely touched them with a light colour pinky brown blush.

LIPS

I used a frosted pinky lipstick as a base and added a light brown glossy finish on top to get the soft mauve colour that echoed the blush colour.

PRODUCTS

Since the eco makeup products are the focus of this look, I will try to include the majority of the products used to create the look, not just the usual key products selection.

Eco Makeup Products for Winter beauty Look

Sappho Organics Liquid Foundation. I’m in love! My skin is so fussy, sensitive and breaks out easily. This is the only liquid foundation that I found so far that works wonderfully for my skin. It actually feels better after wearing it! No wonder, if you read the ingredient list, you would think that its a nurturing skincare cream, not cosmetics. I can honestly write a whole blog just on this foundation! It offers light but build-able coverage, wears well, has moisturizing qualities and anti-aging benefits. One layer application is easy, blends lovely, even though it doesn’t have dimethicone (the stuff that makes foundations slippery, but doesn’t let your skin breathe). If you need to layer for more coverage, I found that the beauty blender (what else, really!) works really well.

Da lish Illumination Concealer. Another great complexion eco product from my personal makeup bag. To find a great under eye concealers is hard even among the multitude of conventional products. It needs to be the right shade, slightly on the peachy or pinky side to counteract the dark circles. It has to be creamy not to accentuate any fine lines but has to set nicely so it doesn’t slide around during the day. It has to have good coverage to actually do the job and if it has a bit of brightening qualities – that’s a bonus. This concealer does it all without any toxic ingredients and it’s made in Canada. I rest my case.

Fitglow Beauty Mineral Eye Trio in Nightfall. It’s a pretty colour combination in the cool tones of lilac and taupe in satin finish and matte black. Easy to work with, though I wish the lilac and black parts would have the same consistency as the taupe – it’s a bit more creamy and pigmented then the other two.

Gabriel Cosmetics Lipstick in Dune. A lovely soft platinum pink with a cool tone frost finish. It feels creamy going on and then sets which makes it really long wearing. It is quite frosty, so be aware if you have dry lips, it can accentuate the dry texture. This brand has been around for awhile – since 1992 and has a few lines that only use 100% natural ingredients and are gluten free and vegan. I’m still discovering their products.

Mineral Fusion Sheer Moisture Lip Tint in Glisten. A nude caramel colour with glossy shimmer. I really like this product’s design, it’s very similar to Clinique Chubby Sticks and so easy to use on the go. It even feels similar going on, sort of a mix between a lipstick and a gloss. I guess the name of it really describes it well. 🙂 It does feel moisturizing, has a lovely glossy finish that is not sticky at all. Like most glossy lip products, I don’t find it stays on long, but I don’t mind reapplying because it feels so nice going on. Mineral Fusion line is the most affordable one that I found so far in the eco makeup range and it’s free from a lot of bad stuff like parabens, talc, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, SLS, and phthalates.

Pure Anada Mineral Blush in Sweet Pea. I reach for this earth rose warm coloured blush very often! It’s a beautiful option for a subtle cheek definition. I recommend really buffing it so that the mica in it will impart a soft glow on the skin. Sometimes mica can be too shimmery, but this finish is perfect. I do find that some of the product flakes off when I pick up the colour with the brush, which means this blush will be done sooner then I would like to. Another Canadian made cosmetic line! I like a cosmetic line that think not only about how green the ingredients they are using are, but also how eco friendly their packaging is. This range of blushes comes in a pan that inserts into a reusable magnetic compact. How cool is that!

NIGHT TIME VERSION OF THE LOOK

Smokey eyes. Eco Makeup Look inspired by winter

When in doubt – go smokey. It’s always the easiest way to amp up the look by adding a bit more darker colour around the eyes. You will only need one colour since you already have a few colours on the eyes already. I picked up the black shade from the trio eyeshadow with a pointy pencil brush and went along the lash line all around the eyes skipping the most inner corner. I really brought the lower shadow down by blending downwards for a more dramatic smokey look at the bottom. Then I took the dark colour to the outer corner crease to give more depth the eye. Black eyeshadow mixed with lilac resulted in a beautiful evening grey smokey eyes look.

Viola – an effortless and elegant makeup look created using mostly natural makeup products!

Let me know if you try it out! Don’t be shy, post your interpretation of the Sweater Weather look here or on Instagram with a tag #EffortlessbyKlavaZ. I would love to see how you did it! #Iwokeuplikethis Natural Makeup Workshop June 17

Sometimes my favourite makeup looks are the ones that don’t even look like makeup was a big part of the morning routine, but there she is: with luminous fresh skin, glowing in all the right places (because when it glows in wrong places we call it greasy), eyes are defined and stand out, brows are polished, there is a flush of youthful colour to the cheeks and lips are smooth with the perfect pink hue to them.  It’s not just about what you do with makeup, but how you apply it and what products you are using that makes a big difference.  And I will be talking about it, sharing the secrets and showing it all step by step at my makeup workshop #Iwokeuplikethis on June 17th at the Handmade Bride.

Natural makeup seminar workshop in Ottawa

What you will learn at my workshop:

Makeup that complements your features, while still being effortless.  How to do makeup that looks like it’s barely there but at the same time transforms you into your better version.  The version that looks like you get 10 hour beauty sleep every day, drink your green smoothie everyday, do yoga twice a day, don’t have any worries or concerns and have all the time in the world to laugh with your friends.   I will show you the best products to achieve this, how to apply them, the techniques, in what order, what tools to use for best results.

I’m very much into makeup that doesn’t take time.  My time in the morning is usually taken up by running after my 16 month-old adorable daughter, so “efficient” is the key word in my routine.  You will learn the tricks and shortcuts to achieving desirable effects.

It took me years at a beauty counter helping hundreds of women to find and perfect makeup techniques that work and I can’t wait to share them!  I will demystify highlighting, contouring and bronzing and show you the easy daytime appropriate way to do it (forget that 30 minute Youtube tutorial involving 3 different shades of concealer).

over exaggerated contouring and highlighting

How NOT to contour

You will also learn the latest summer beauty trends and how to easily incorporate them into your daily routine.   I will show you how you can add just one thing to your look to make it more fresh and current.

What to expect from my workshop:

It will be a fun summer beauty event with delicious catering by Gourmet, cocktails made for sharing with friends and a pop-up shop by Louche Lily.  It’s a trendy online Eco beauty boutique that carries the best natural and organic beauty products on the market.  Beauty without Sacrifice is their motto and I’m such a believer in it (as you will find out if you don’t know me already)!  Their products are carefully selected, maintaining the highest quality ingredients for your skin.  Simply put, the products must produce RESULTS, contain healthy ingredients and be luxurious to look at, to feel and ultimately to bring home for your vanity table.

Trust Fund Beauty nail polishes

Extra bonus will be having Lyz Plant – a world renowned makeup artist who has been practicing make up artistry for 15 years and a founder and CEO of Louche Lily at the event.  When not found behind a computer screen keeping up on the most savvy beauty trends for Louche Lily, you can most likely find Lyz Plant at any given Fashion Week, or in front of a possible celebrity or bride.  I have to admit, I have a bit (big!) of a crush on Lyz, her talent and her mastermind. 🙂  How amazing it will be to have her there to tell us about her favourite products that she tested out herself on numerous high-mantainance clients and to recommend makeup and skincare to my guests one-on-one!  I’m always searching for natural products that deliver, so I’m really looking forward to picking her brain.

The workshop will be held at The Handmade Bride boutique, which I like to visit once in awhile simply for inspiration, that’s how beautiful the space and dresses are.  Meaghan, the genius behind it, hand picks independent Canadian designers with Indie spirit for boutique’s dresses and accessories (fun bow-ties and lovely floral crowns among many others).   I love that they offer dress alterations not just on their own, but customers’ dresses bought elsewhere as well!

I know that by now the only thing you would like to know is where to buy the tickets to this fabulous event!  Follow this LINK at Snapuptickets.com to register for the workshop and buy your tickets.

At the last makeup workshop I did women were telling me that if they knew it would be this much fun they would have brought friends.  Hint, hint.

Can’t wait to see you at my summer beauty workshop!  I promise you will have an amazing time!  And maybe will get to be my model for one of the looks! 😉
