Natural Beauty Makeup Look – Eco February

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly beauty series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural makeup looks for everyday life.

It’s time for a Eco Natural Beauty Makeup Look of the month when I use only natural and/or organic products for creating it!

I love doing this as it gives me an excuse to play and explore more non-toxic beauty products and expand my eco makeup kit, which is a big goal for me this year.  My everyday personal makeup bag is pretty much mostly green cosmetics, especially my complexion products, like powder and foundation.  I figured since everything from our skin gets absorbed in our body, it’s important to have these products toxin-free.  Plus it agrees better with my sensitive skin and it doesn’t make me break out.

I wrote all about how I became interested in natural cosmetics in my first Eco Look post.

For Eco February Makeup Look I partnered up with Louche Lily – a lovely online eco boutique carrying eco awesome products, specializing in skincare, body/care, makeup and accessories.  The brands in her store are sourced from all around the world, with strong focus on Canada and the US, with utmost thought and care.  The founder, Lyz Plant, is a talented makeup artist (and just the coolest girl that I can chat with endlessly) carefully selects all the products to make sure that they offer the highest quality ingredients for skin.   This girl knows what she is talking about!  The amount of research and personally trying out all the cosmetics before offering them in her store is astounding!  She is a walking encyclopedia on all things toxic that shouldn’t be in our makeup products.  I was super excited about her generous offer to play with her pro eco makeup kit!!!  Needless to say, it was a kid in a candy store moment. 🙂

Eco February Makeup Look THE LOOK

Eco February Look was inspired by the cold frosted outside, of course!  Cool tones are what I reach for during the winter the most, so that’s what I focused on creating this makeup as well.  The soft sparkle of snow inspired the shimmery eye shadows all around the eyes.  I wanted to create a look that has a hint of glam to it, to show that eco doesn’t have to mean very natural looking.  That’s why I chose a brighter colour lip in a beautiful lavender pink for a fun pop of colour.

Klava Z, Ottawa makeup artist created natural beauty makeup with a shimmery brown eyes and pink lavender lips using only natural cosmetics. A fun collage of behind the scenes images from the photoshoot, styled outfit shots and model with beautiful makeup.

FACE

Since in the winter we do need a bit more coverage because the cool light outside is less forgiving I applied a creamy foundation all over and made sure that the skin is looking even-toned.  I infused a soft pink flush on the cheeks with a creamy blush by applying it with my fingers and added a radiant glow to the cheekbones with a creamy highlighter, making sure that the blush and highlighter blend into each other.

EYES

I started by creating a pretty base of shimmery light ivory colour all over the lids using this very handy duo eye pencil that has light colour on one side and dark on the other.  Then I turned around the eye pencil and applied the midtone brown shade in the outer corner going up towards the crease and slightly past it, so that when the models eyes are open you can see a bit of colour extending from her crease towards the brow.  I also used this side of the eye pencil under the eye for a hint of pretty shine.

A brown eyeliner was used to create a very thin definition on the top and also in the bottom waterline.

TECHNIQUE TIP – EYE BRIGHTENING

Klava Z, makeup artist in Ottawa is showing how to do eye makeup and brighten the eyes on a model for her Natural Beauty Look Eco February

To bring more light to the eye and open it up a bit more in the middle, I applied a light shimmery colour eyeshadow right in the middle of the eyelid tapping it on with a flat brush for more intensity (as opposed to blending it in).  Of course, I finished with a generous application of mascara (is there other way with mascara, really?).

This technique is such an easy and fast step that will help your eyes to catch extra light and bring a flattering sparkle to the eye.  It’s all about small details in makeup, right?  You can do this with any of your eye makeup and if you are in rush just use your finger to tap the eye shadow on the eyelid.  If you would like to learn more techniques and become a pro at your own makeup then see me for a makeup lesson.

LIPS

Gorgeous shade of bright lavender-pink was swiped on the lips to give the whole look a brightening lift with a lovely pop of colour and take the makeup from the routine natural to a fresh pretty look.

PRODUCTS

The key products to achieving this look are the eye-shadows, cheek products and the lipstick, which I will provide my short reviews on as usual.  However since I’m really focusing on introducing natural makeup products, I will list all the products I used.

Natural Makeup Products by Ilia, Vapour, Dalish and 100% Pure cosmetics used by Klava Z, Ottawa makeup artist, to create a Natural Beauty Makeup Look Eco February

100% Pure Dual-Ended Creamstick Eyeliner in Cotton & Silk.  I always look for ways to simplify my makeup application and this eye pencil allows me to do just this!  Double bonus for two gorgeous colours with pearly finish in one pencil! It’s so easy to use that you don’t need a brush and there is no mess from powder eyeshadows.  Just apply this  pencil where you want it, whether as an eye-liner or a shadow; and then blend the edges by patting them with your finger.  It glides on creamy and smooth.  If your skin is on the oily side I would recommend either wearing a primer or set with powder eyeshadow on top for more long wearing power.

100% Pure Eye Shadow Vanilla Sugar.  A beautiful neutral eye shadow colour with sparkle, that is pigmented with fruit cosmetics.

ILIA Lipstick in Around The World.  ILIA Lipstick combines organic ingredients with contemporary colors blended into a creamy and long lasting semi-matte finish.  I love the selection of lipstick colours ILIA offers!  This rose hue lipstick with a strong lavender undertone is one of those rare purple shade which can be worn by nearly everyone.

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Lovely.  Lovely is a beautiful pink tone.  Its rich color pigment has a long-lasting effect that gives a pretty flushed-cheek look.  This shade is incredible for all skin tones as well.  The creamy consistency of this cream blush blends beautifully and smoothly with the warmth of the fingers or a brush.

ILIA Cosmic Dancer Highlight.  I’m all about highlighters, especially so natural looking as this one!  It’s very discreet, giving the skin true glow without the shimmer.   This subtle golden hued highlighter is great at adding dimension and vitality to the skin.  The texture is a bit thick but easy to bend still.

100% Pure Eyebrow in Brunette

100% Pure Maracuja Oil Mascara Length & Separating in Black Tea

100% Pure Long Last Liner in Dark Cacao

Dalish Concealer C02.  I have raved about this concealer here already.

Vapor Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation

Vapor Organic Beauty Stratus Instant Skin Perfector.

You can find all these natural beauties at Louche Lily Eco Beauty Boutique.

GLAMMED UP VERSION OF THE LOOK

Natural Beauty Eco Makeup Look created by Klava Z Ottawa makeup artist with shimmery brown and vanilla shades on the eyes, glowy skin and mulberry colour lipstick .

It’s so easy to amp up the glam of this look just by adding a deeper lipstick colour.  I applied a mulberry colour lipstick right on top of the pink one that was already there.  What a gorgeous and effortless look!

Chic Valentine Makeup Look

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly makeup series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural looks for everyday life.

As I promised in my last blog post this week I’m sharing the second look I created for Valentines Day called Chic Valentine.

I wanted to create two makeup looks for two different girls.  First Sweet Valentine makeup look is a softer, girlie makeup in all pink tones that I imagined a shy romantic girl would like to wear.   This second look – Chic Valentine is for a woman who is confident and wants a bit of sizzle to her look but still polished and not look like she is trying too hard (which she has no time to do anyway :).  By the way, I almost got that dress that the ladies at Vincent boutique provided us with for the shoot of this look, I loved it so much!  Unfortunately, (or fortunately for my wallet) they didn’t have my size 🙁  Take a look at the picture below – it’s a classy sexy perfection that complemented the look perfectly!

Chic Valentine Makeup Look

THE LOOK

The Chic Valentine look is about creating smoldering alluring eyes that stand out with a smokey liner all around them.  It’s the kind of toned down smokey eyes that makes you think “wow, beautiful eyes!” not “wow, great smokey eye makeup!”.   And it’s so easy to do this eye makeup as you will see in my technique breakdown below.  The brown smokey eyes are complemented with a nude glossy pout and a slight definition of the cheeks.  This makeup look is elegant with a hint of sexy – a perfect Valentine’s Day date look if you are going out to a nice restaurant.

Chic Valentine 3 Collage

SKIN

I created a smooth evened out skin finish on the model’s face using a cream foundation with medium coverage.  I tend to use foundations with a bit more coverage for an evening makeup.  I defined cheeks with  a matte peachy brown colour blush by contouring them rather then applying blush in a traditional way. Which means I swiped it gently under the cheekbones instead of going on the apples of the cheeks.  This method of blush application makes the cheekbones stand out, creating more defined structure and gives the whole face a more polished look.   It’s a good idea to set the foundation with a light dusting of transparent powder in the middle of the face (the T-zone) to ensure that the makeup stays flawless in the areas prone to get shiny.

EYES

I perfected brows with a brow pencil for a more clean finish.  All over the eyelid I applied an eyeshadow in taupe brown colour as a base.

TECHNIQUE TIP – SMOKEY EYELINER

Chic Valentine Techinque Collage

This is one of my favourite ways to create an elegant smokey eye look in no time at all and with only one product!  How great is that?!

I used a chubby kohl eye pencil and rimmed the eyes with it all around in a thick liner.  It is important to choose an eye pencil that has a soft creamy texture and is easy to blend, like most kohl formulas are.  Since the pencil is chubby already I was able to achieve a thicker eyeliner very quickly by doing back and forth motion in short strokes around the eye so that the liner went right into the lash line.  For that extra sizzle on the eyes I extended the liner in a sexy feline flick leading from the bottom of the eye and connecting the top liner with it.

Then I took a pencil brush with a pointy tip and smudged the edges of the liner all over with the same back and forth motion.

Two minutes, ok maybe three, and you are done!

Check my Instagram @KlavaZ.Makeup for a video of this technique tip that I will be posting some time this week!  Or better yet, see me for a makeup lesson to learn this and many other techniques to amp up your makeup game. 😉

LIPS

With the focus being on the eyes all I needed to do is slick on a nude shiny gloss for luscious looking lips.

PRODUCTS

Products Chic Valentine

Burberry Eye Colour Cream in Mink #102.   I was very excited when these eyeshadows launched a few months ago.  They are my everyday favourites to use on myself.  They have a unique cream-to-powder finish that is super smooth and easy to blend.  It is also really long-lasting and the only eyeshadow that I dare to apply without an eye primer first because of how well it applies and lasts.  This colour is medium taupe brown and is sure to become a staple colour in anybody’s makeup bag.

Burberry Effortless Blendable Kohl in Chestnut Brown #02.  It is a thick very pigmented crayon in a creamy formula that applies so effortlessly without pulling or tugging on skin and beautiful for creating liner or smokey eyes.  After being applied its’ texture stays creamy for easy blending and if you want longevity, I would recommend setting with a powder eye shadow.

MAC Pencil Brush #219.  As the name suggests, the fibres of this brush are gathered into a pencil-shaped tip.  It really is ideal for blending eye liner into eye shadow to create a smoky-looking eye and can also be used for a more precise shading on the lid or in the eye crease.

MAC Lipglass in Prrr.  Ah, good old Prrr!  It has been around for a long time and is still a perfect choice for a nude pinky-peach pout.  I reach out for this formula of a lipgloss when I’m looking for a pigmented product with a high-gloss, glass-like finish.  It is sticky feeling but that’s what makes it so long-wearing.

MAC Blush in Gingerly.  This sheer toned blush is not as pigmented as other MAC blush formulas, which makes it easier to apply without going overboard.  It’s warm peachy bronze colour is lovely on medium golden skin tones.  Lighter skin lovelies – apply with caution and blend well!

GLAMMED UP VERSION OF THE LOOK

Glammed Chic Valentine Collage

If you are looking for a look with a stronger impact (read sexier) then it’s quite easy to achieve it with a few tweaks of this makeup.  Apply a black long-wearing eyeliner in the waterline and false lashes that flare out on the outer corners to accentuate the alluring almond shape created by the cat eyeliner even more.  Bam!  Instant drama on the eyes.  Finish with patting a warm shade of red lipstick on the lips and then blotting once to take off a bit of pigment for a softer, not in-your-face-red-lips, finish.  Still looking effortless, still looking chic, just more fierce.

Chic Valentine4 Collage

I don’t know about you but I want to go and try this out on myself right now!  It’s been awhile since I have done strong makeup look on myself.  🙂  If you do try this look, I would love to see it!  Don’t be shy, post your interpretation of the Chic Valentine look here or on Instagram with a tag #EffortlessbyKlavaZ.

Just a few days left till the Valentine’s Day!  I still don’t have any plans, as I’m always so last minute.  However, I’m excited about an excuse to do something with my husband, just the two of us!  It doesn’t happen often anymore as our life is tailored to appease a 2-year-old cutie in our family.  Whatever your plans are for this Valentine’s Day and whatever you choose to do; whether it’s a romantic date with someone who makes your heart flutter or a fun outing with your girlfriends or a pampering night with yourself –  I hope you have an amazing day filled with love!

Pretty pink Makeup Look for a Valentine day

Sweet Valentine Makeup Look

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly makeup series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural looks for everyday life.

I know that we don’t need an official day to celebrate our love relationships, but I’m a romantic and I love an excuse to celebrate!  There is a certain air of excited anticipation as women get ready for their date on this day and spend a bit more time then usual to make sure we look our best.  Also I got engaged on a Valentines day, so it’s extra special for me!  Maybe that’s why I got excited and created two different looks for your inspiration. 🙂  This week I will start with the Sweet Valentine look.

Pretty pink makeup look

THE LOOK

When I thought about this look I imagined a demure girlie girl with a whimsical style, almost Carrie Bradshaw-esque like that believes in love at first sight and holding hands.  This makeup look is certainly girlie with a soft pink palette on eyes, cheeks and lips, but not overpoweringly so.  It’s simply lovely.  Women often shy away from wearing pinks on their eyes, but I happen to think that a properly chosen shade of pink can be very flattering and feminine.  My trick to avoid making the eyes look sick when wearing pinks is to blend them with other colours and don’t judge how it looks until you do eyeliner and mascara.  Once you have an eyeliner that serves as a border between the eyeshadow and your eye ball, pink colour looks 10 times better, trust me.   Let’s get to the details, shall we?

Collage of photos for Sweet Valentine Makeup look

HOW TO

SKIN

I evened out model’s skin with a creamy foundation that has medium coverage.  Since this is a going out look it’s ok to wear a bit more foundation to make sure the skin looks really even toned as long as it’s blended well. 🙂 I set the foundation with sheer powder to achieve this natural matte skin finish and lightly brushed the softest pink blush on the cheeks for a kiss of barely there colour.

EYES

To make sure the colours of the eyeshadows pop nicely I used a primer in a nude beige colour first to cover any lid discoloration that might interfere with the eyeshadows.  Then I applied a light pink colour eyeshadow all over the lid, a darker pink in the crease and a browny pink in the outer corner and smudged it on the bottom lash line as well.  I almost always brighten up the inner corner of the eyes with a light eyeshadow that is slightly (or very, depending on the look) shimmery.  The eyes were finished with a dark purple gel eyeliner to keep all the makeup in the same tones.

TECHNIQUE TIP – CURLING LASHES AND APPLYING MASCARA

How to apply mascara

A big part of this look is to have these wide open innocent Bambi eyes, so I really focused on making the model’s eyes look more open.  There are few tricks to achieve this.  First, ALWAYS curl your lashes!  I meant it!  Unless you have curly lashes already, you will be amazed at a difference and will love the push up effect!  Yep, the push up effect is not just for a bra. 😉  When you curl your lashes, it will make them look longer and your eyes more open and bigger.  Now I know that a lash curler can look like a torture device and in the inexperienced hands it can certainly become one.  Here is how you want to use it not to hurt yourself and to achieve maximum impact.

Find a curler that works for your eye shape.  They are not all created the same, so try them out before you buy.  Always curl your lashes before you put on mascara.  You can risk breaking your lashes if you do it the other way around.  To curl – look straight in the mirror and bring the lash curler from under towards the eye so that your hand makes a slight dip approaching the eye. Practice getting the curler as close to the lash roots as you can without pinching your skin.  This will give you the most lifting and elongating effect.  Do a gentle test squeeze of the curler to make sure that you don’t have your skin caught and then pump the curler squeezing tight for about 5 seconds.  Open the curler, move up the length of your lashes and stop half way and curl again to give them a nice C-shape curl instead of a harsh L-shape one.

You can help your lashes stay curled when applying mascara by holding the wand horizontally and wiggling it back and forth and then pushing it up as you move the wand upwards.

Seems like such simple things, like curling lashes and putting mascara on them, but there is are these technique tips that make it more effective and easier!  I find it’s like that with most things in makeup and I love showing women all the tricks!  So if you are in Ottawa and would like to become a pro at your own makeup, check out my Educating page.

LIPS

The lips were painted in pink (of course!) see-through glossy stain.  I didn’t want the opacity and heavier texture of the regular lipstick to keep the feel of this look light and playful.

PRODUCTS

Makeup products for Sweet Valentine look

MAC Eyeshadow Palette.  I love the fact that you can make your own palettes at MAC!  In case you didn’t know, you can purchase any of their regular permanent eyeshadows in pans that fit in the empty palette of 4 or 15 eye shadows.  In this palette I put together the following eyeshadows:  Vanilla – warm ivory, Yogurt – soft pale pink, Girlie (of course!) – rosy pink, Haux – soft muted rosy brown.

MAC Fluidline in Macroviolet.  My go to gel eyeliner that applies super smooth and has a finished look of a muted liquid liner.  It stays on really well with minimal smudging.  The best part is that you get to choose the brush to use with it depending on the effect you are going for.  This one is a beautiful deep smokey violet colour.

Shu Uemura Lash Curler.  If you type in google search Shu Uemura, the first thing that comes up is Lash Curler.  They set the standard many years ago and it is still one of the best on the market that has the least potential to hurt your eye and so easy to use.  Also seems to work for most eye shapes unless extremely hooded.  I still remember researching where I can get one since I couldn’t get it in Victoria, BC (where I lived at the time) and purchasing my first one on a trip to San Francisco.

Burberry Bold Lash Macsara in Ebony.  If you like high-impact mascara with lots of volume on the lashes (ahem, yes!) – this is the one for you!  The formula is creamy and very pigmented and the fibre brush has the perfect spacing between the bristles to coat lashes very thoroughly and generously in a super black bold finish.

Benefit Pin Up Lash.  This is the first time I purchased Benefit lashes.  I didn’t even know they make false lashes.  I came across them searching for a perfect lash for the amped up version of this Sweet Valentine look and this has certainly delivered!  They are multi-layered, so it looks like there are three different types of lashes placed on top of each other creating really fluffy dramatic effect without looking too heavy.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Aqua Laque in Rose on the Rocks.  This product has a unique and pleasant texture – feels like water going on, so lightweight and cooling.  It has more colour intensity then a regular lipgloss with a mirror-like shine minus the sticky effect.  The glossy finish wears off but the colour stain stays for a long time.

GLAMED UP VERSION OF THE LOOK

IMG_4008

I didn’t want to go darker on the eyes or on the lips to temper with the sweetness of this look, so I decided to pump up the lashes volume by adding dramatic false lashes and a swipe of black liner on top of them.  The difference with such a subtle change can be quite big, I think.   The eyes have an extra oomph to them without using darker or brighter eyeshadows.  Judge for yourself.

Pretty pink makeup

I wanted to mention my exciting partnership – starting with this look the very stylish and awesome girls at Vincent Boutique  will be providing my Beauty Series with stunning clothing that makes my wardrobe jealous.  I’m sure you have noticed how gorgeous the outfit for this look is!  You are lucky if you leave in Ottawa then you can check out them and their beautifully curated collections in their location on Preston, otherwise it’s online creeping, I mean shopping for the rest of you! 🙂   Here is some more eye candy…

The look for Valentine's Day - sweet and girlie

Fresh dewy makeup

Yoga Glow Makeup Look

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly makeup series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural looks for everyday life.  I love teaching women about makeup, so if you are in Ottawa and would like to become a pro at your own makeup, check out my Educating page.

Natural glowy yoga makeup look

I love, crave, need yoga in my life.  I truly believe everyone should find a yoga practice that suits their personality and do it!  There are so many benefits to yoga, books have been written about it, so I won’t even attempt to list them all or pretend to know them all.  I just know that for me, it’s what grounds me, what gives me mental balance, what stops my mind from running overtime when I need to sleep, what keeps me sane in the busy hustle of the day, what gives me confidence in my body and lets me enjoy my body.  Yoga inspires so much in my life that it’s no wonder it was an inspiration for a makeup look as well. 🙂

THE LOOK

Now I’m not suggesting to wear makeup to a yoga class – that’s not what this look is about.  You can if you want to, it depends on your comfort level of having “naked” face in public.  This look is about using and enhancing that glow you get post yoga (or any good workout really) or about faking that glow in case you didn’t have time to do your yoga but would like to look like you did.  The focus of this look is beautiful healthy fresh looking skin that is radiant and glowy.  It’s the kind of skin that I personally would love to have all the time!  I’m putting glow everywhere – the eyes, the skin, the lips.  I’m using the strobing technique, but a bit toned down, so it looks like it’s your skin that’s naturally glowy, not that you packed on a few layers of shimmery highlighter on your face.  In case you don’t know what strobing is – it’s basically intense highlighting of certain parts of the face.

This is probably going to be the most natural look of my Beauty Series, but also one that is a go-to for so many women: mascara, liner, lipgloss done.  Here I offer a version of a classic very natural makeup look with a slight enhancement of strobing.

BeFunky 10Collage

HOW TO

SKIN

You start preparing for this makeup look by eating healthy, drinking lots of water and freshly pressed juices, not smoking, working out, going to bed early and getting your 8 hour beauty sleep; and taking care of your skin everyday with a skincare regime that’s appropriate to your skin type and age… you know where I’m going with this.  Because no matter how good your foundation is you can’t fake healthy looking skin.  You can fake the glow and I will share a few tricks with you here, BUT if you want truly flawless, you gotta work for it girl.  Yes, there are foundations with great coverage and wonderful ingredients that can give you all kinds of effects and cover up all kinds of complexion problems, but it will never look as good as naturally healthy skin.

There are some lucky people though that have flawless skin without putting any effort into taking care of it.  I don’t even want to talk about them!  They don’t know how good they have it.  Only people like myself, who have battled with problematic skin, can appreciate healthy, smooth and blemish-free skin.  Moving on…

After letting the moisturizer absorb I applied an illuminating primer that makes the skin look very hydrated and glowy, but not shiny.  After it set for about a minute I applied this new generation foundation that has extremely thin texture and again, a radiant finish.  Both products feel like you are not wearing anything on the skin and evens out the tone of the skin slightly.  This combination doesn’t provide much coverage, its main purpose is to impart a beautiful glow on the skin.  The kind that would make Jlo envious. 😉

A cream blush in neutral peach was blended very softly on the apples of the cheeks.

Fresh natural makeup with glowy radiant skin

TECHNIQUE TIP – STROBING

As I have mentioned above, I did a subtle version of strobing in order to really intensify the radiant look of the skin.  Another effect of strobing is such that the parts of the face where you put highlighter will come visually forward.  It’s all about using reflection on high planes and points of the face that catch the light to create spotlit areas and bring focus and shape to the face.  Places that are good to highlight are: your brow bone, inner corners of the eyes, bridge of your nose, top of your cheekbones and along your Cupid’s bow.

Since I wanted to achieve a Yoga Glow, not the Night Out Glow, I used a cream product that is very light in colour with a pearly finish so that once its settled into the skin it looked like the model’s skin is naturally this radiant.  I picked it up with a small size dual flat topped fiber brush because I wanted to apply the product on the smaller area and have a good control over where I’m applying this highlighter.  Then I buffed the cream in circular motion along the cheek bones, under the brows and on the bridge of the nose.  Once most of the product was on the skin I went over the edges of the cream with buffing motion for a seamless transition of the product.

Check my Instagram @KlavaZ.Makeup for a video of this technique tip.

EYES

Natural eye makeup

The eyes got a dusting of an ivory eyeshadow with a shiny finish and a very light-handed application of a slate grey eyeshadow as an eyeliner with an angle brush flesh against the lash line.

LIPS

I finished the look with an application of a neutral beige lipgloss.

As I promised, glow everywhere – skin, eyes and lips!

PRODUCTS

Since the focus of the look is creating a beautiful glow on the skin, I will share some of my favourite products to achieve that.

Burberry, MAC and Pur Minerals Makeup products for Yoga Glow

Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base – Nude Radiance #01.  This is the main ingredient of the Yoga Glow!  I have been using this product for almost a year now and I reach for it all the time whether on my photoshoots or everyday clients.  This is a brightening primer with reflection pearls in it that gives a shimmer-free luminosity to the skin with a perfect amount of glow that is not oily or wet looking.  It feels incredibly light and hydrating on the skin since it’s 55% water infused.  There are many uses of this beautiful luminizer.  You can use it as is on nude skin to liven it up a bit, or as a base for your foundation.  I like to mix it with foundation to thin it out and add radiance to it or to pat it on its own on top of the foundation as a highlighter on cheekbones.

Burberry Eye Colour Glow in Gold Pearl 001.  I love this range of eyeshadows from Burberry because it creates a wash of luminous highlighting colour.  It has light-refelcting particles that gives this glistening rather then shimmery effect when applied dry.  You can apply it wet and the shine becomes almost metallic high shimmer.  Blends on the skin smooth and easy, like every Burberry product.  Sometimes when I want a more high-impact highlight I use it as my strobing product all over the face, not just on the eyes.

Pur Minerals Air CC Cushion Foundation.  The cushion design of foundation is becoming very popular and many makeup brands are jumping on this trend that originated in Korea.  The liquid foundation is suspended inside a sponge and to get the product you press lightly on the sponge either with the provided applicator, a brush or your fingers.  I like the fact that you will never pick up too much foundation with this design.  I haven’t had a chance to play with it a lot, but I already love the truly weightless feel of this mousse-like product.  There is a reason it’s called “Air”! It’s very sheer and slightly build-able, but not much.  The end result is like a thin perfecting slightly dewy veil.  Perfect day time foundation.

MAC Luna Cream Colour Base.  I have featured this product in a different colour already in the post on Wakeup Makeup.  This shows how much I love this versatile cream!  I have it in a few colours and use it to create beautiful highlights anywhere on the skin.  This one is an icy white colour with soft shimmer that looks like pearly moonlight reflecting of your skin when buffed in well.

MAC 188 Small Duo Fiber Face Brush.  What I love about duo face brushes is that you can use them with any formulas – liquid, cream, powder.  I find it works best when used in buffing motion (wax on, wax off 🙂  I wrote a bit more about the benefits of dual fiber brush in my first post of the Everyday Effortless by Klava Z Beauty Series here.

NIGHT TIME VERSION OF THE LOOK

This is a perfect look to transition into wearing a bright lip and the easiest way to amp up the makeup.  Just paint your lips with a bright colour lipstick with a glossy finish.  Remember – we are sticking with glow everywhere.  🙂 I chose a cool tone dark magenta that pairs so beautifully with the model’s green eyes and makes them pop.  The deeper and more matte versions of this colour have been super trendy this winter.  This colour surprisingly works on many skin tones and makes teeth look whiter (bonus!).

I love this effortless look of fresh face with minimal makeup and a pop of colour on the lips and resort to it very often when I don’t feel like putting a lot of time into my makeup and want an instant impact.

Organic Makeup look inspired by winter beauty

Sweater Weather Eco Makeup Look

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly makeup series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural looks for everyday life. #EffortlessbyKlavaZ

This is a special edition of the Beauty Series that I’m extra excited about!  Once a month I will be releasing a look that will be focused on using mostly or all eco beauty products.  If you know me or you had a chance to read About Klava then you know how passionate I am about natural cosmetics!  I blame my green ways on my 10 years of living in the beautiful West Coast of Canada, Victoria BC.  Life is a bit less hectic there with a big focus on living consciously, honouring our natural environment and your body by avoid putting toxins in it.

I stepped on the path of natural wellness when my health wasn’t great and being motivated to get better and naturally curious I researched and read a lot about healthy lifestyle, nutrition and since I was a makeup artist, cosmetics as well.  I was lovingly named “our hippie” by the MAC girls I worked together with at the store at the time.  I was really shocked to learn how many toxic ingredients cosmetic companies add to their products!  So I was eager to find alternative makeup and skincare that would perform well without the bad stuff in them.  I know that there is still an impression that natural organic makeup products don’t work well, but natural makeup has progressed a long way since the original “crunchy” ways.

Hopefully with my once a month green makeup look I can show you that there are many green products that work just as well and sometimes better then conventional cosmetics.  Every month I discover new brands that produce beautiful eco clean makeup!  A lot of them I found through my little (ahem, big) addiction called Instagram. 🙂 I’m slowly working towards my goal – a fully stocked eco kit with the best natural organic products in the market.

THE LOOK

Winter Beauty Eco Makeup look Before and After

This green beauty look is called Sweater Weather.  It is inspired by the soft cool tones of winter, when snow makes all colours look slightly muted.  When I put on my chunky knit sweater and my hat and feeling all cozy, I feel like adding a bit of lightness to my look, like crips winter air.   I think that the combination of lilac and mauve tones worked well to convey that feeling. 🙂

Before I get to this look in details, I wanted to mention that I recently did a guest blog post on my friend’s blog for her wedding planning and styling company Toast Events. I blogged about winter specific makeup tricks and creating makeup looks for a special occasion like winter wedding.  Check it out here.

Winter Beauty Makeup Look

HOW TO

EYES

Very often I start with the eyes and then do the rest of the face.  I do so in case I have some fall outs from the eyeshadows under the eyes.  This way I don’t have to redo my concealer or foundation.  I can easily swipe them away and finish with the skin.

TECHNIQUE TIP – EYE SHADOW

The focus of my technique is the application of the eyeshadow for this look.  I used a slightly frosted lilac eyeshadow and applied it with a flat firm eyeshadow shader brush all over the eyelids, in the inner corners and all over under the eyes as well.  I chose a firm brush because I really wanted the light colour to show up and brighten up the eye with its lilac shine.  I like to switch it up and use light colours instead of dark to line the bottom  of the eyes.  It makes the eyes stand out in a different way, it’s sort of has this airy effect.  This light shade of lilac looks good with most eye-colours and flatters most skin tones, but dark.  Somebody with a darker skin tone can still wear it, but would have to use this colour very sparingly, blended with other colours to avoid looking too stark of a contrast.

Then I used a small pointy pencil brush and applied a taupe colour in the inner corner of the eyes and blended its edges with a clean soft and fluffy blending brush for a washed out effect.  I only wanted a hint of colour in the outer corner to ground the lilac colour a bit, that’s why I blended it well with a clean brush.

In the middle of this week I will be posting the video of this technique tip on my Instagram @KlavaZ.Makeup.

SKIN

I applied a creamy foundation all over the face and blended it in with my fingers until it looked like my model’s actual skin just slightly perfected.  The foundation I used didn’t need any setting with powder on model’s skin.  To bring subtle colour to the cheeks I barely touched them with a light colour pinky brown blush.

LIPS

I used a frosted pinky lipstick as a base and added a light brown glossy finish on top to get the soft mauve colour that echoed the blush colour.

PRODUCTS

Since the eco makeup products are the focus of this look, I will try to include the majority of the products used to create the look, not just the usual key products selection.

Eco Makeup Products for Winter beauty Look

Sappho Organics Liquid Foundation.  I’m in love!  My skin is so fussy, sensitive and breaks out easily.  This is the only liquid foundation that I found so far that works wonderfully for my skin.   It actually feels better after wearing it!  No wonder, if you read the ingredient list, you would think that its a nurturing skincare cream, not cosmetics.  I can honestly write a whole blog just on this foundation!  It offers light but build-able coverage, wears well, has moisturizing qualities and anti-aging benefits.  One layer application is easy, blends lovely, even though it doesn’t have dimethicone (the stuff that makes foundations slippery, but doesn’t let your skin breathe).  If you need to layer for more coverage, I found that the beauty blender (what else, really!) works really well.

Da lish Illumination Concealer.  Another great complexion eco product from my personal makeup bag.  To find a great under eye concealers is hard even among the multitude of conventional products.  It needs to be the right shade, slightly on the peachy or pinky side to counteract the dark circles.  It has to be creamy not to accentuate any fine lines but has to set nicely so it doesn’t slide around during the day.  It has to have good coverage to actually do the job and if it has a bit of brightening qualities – that’s a bonus.  This concealer does it all without any toxic ingredients and it’s made in Canada.  I rest my case.

Fitglow Beauty Mineral Eye Trio in Nightfall.  It’s a pretty colour combination in the cool tones of lilac and taupe in satin finish and matte black.  Easy to work with, though I wish the lilac and black parts would have the same consistency as the taupe – it’s a bit more creamy and pigmented then the other two.

Gabriel Cosmetics Lipstick in Dune.  A lovely soft platinum pink with a cool tone frost finish.  It feels creamy going on and then sets which makes it really long wearing.  It is quite frosty, so be aware if you have dry lips, it can accentuate the dry texture.  This brand has been around for awhile – since 1992 and has a few lines that only use 100% natural ingredients and are gluten free and vegan.  I’m still discovering their products.

Mineral Fusion Sheer Moisture Lip Tint in Glisten.  A nude caramel colour with glossy shimmer.  I really like this product’s design, it’s very similar to Clinique Chubby Sticks and so easy to use on the go.  It even feels similar going on, sort of a mix between a lipstick and a gloss.  I guess the name of it really describes it well. 🙂  It does feel moisturizing, has a lovely glossy finish that is not sticky at all.  Like most glossy lip products, I don’t find it stays on long, but I don’t mind reapplying because it feels so nice going on.  Mineral Fusion line is the most affordable one that I found so far in the eco makeup range and it’s free from a lot of bad stuff like parabens, talc, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, SLS, and phthalates.

Pure Anada Mineral Blush in Sweet Pea.  I reach for this earth rose warm coloured blush very often!  It’s a beautiful option for a subtle cheek definition.  I recommend really buffing it so that the mica in it will impart a soft glow on the skin.  Sometimes mica can be too shimmery, but this finish is perfect.  I do find that some of the product flakes off when I pick up the colour with the brush, which means this blush will be done sooner then I would like to.  Another Canadian made cosmetic line!  I like a cosmetic line that think not only about how green the ingredients they are using are, but also how eco friendly their packaging is.  This range of blushes comes in a pan that inserts into a reusable magnetic compact.  How cool is that!

NIGHT TIME VERSION OF THE LOOK

Smokey eyes. Eco Makeup Look inspired by winter

When in doubt – go smokey.  It’s always the easiest way to amp up the look by adding a bit more darker colour around the eyes.  You will only need one colour since you already have a few colours on the eyes already.  I picked up the black shade from the trio eyeshadow with a pointy pencil brush and went along the lash line all around the eyes skipping the most inner corner.  I really brought the lower shadow down by blending downwards for a more dramatic smokey look at the bottom.  Then I took the dark colour to the outer corner crease to give more depth the eye.  Black eyeshadow mixed with lilac resulted in a beautiful evening grey smokey eyes look.

Viola – an effortless and elegant makeup look created using mostly natural makeup products!

Day Date Makeup Look

Hello beautiful!

Welcome to Everyday Effortless Beauty Series by Klava Z, which is a weekly makeup series showing you how to do flawless, fresh, fun and natural looks for everyday life.

Before/After Makeup Look #2 Day Date, Natural Makeup, glow skin, pink lips, thin winged eye-liner, pretty date makeup

THE LOOK

Look#2 is called Day Date.  It’s pretty self-explanatory.  🙂 Day date is an occasion where you don’t want to go all out and put a lot of makeup on, because that would just look like you are trying too hard and who knows if another date would follow… just kidding.  My version of Day Date makeup is fresh and approachable, a natural you with a touch of cute and playful.  Save the drama and sexiness for a night time vis-a-vis.  😉  I hope that’s still the case in the world, I’m going on my memory here.  I haven’t been on a day date in a few years – babies are not very day date friendly. 🙂  Also, you have to think about the light that you are doing the makeup for – the more natural light, the less makeup.  That’s why if you are doing your makeup in the bathroom light it’s very important to do a natural light check before heading out.  You just might notice that the blush needs to be blended a bit (or a lot) more.

This look is focused on enhancing your natural beauty by defining your eyes with an eyeliner with a small flick on the end, adding a slightly playful feel to makeup, keeping the rest neutral with soft pink glossy lip.  It’s amazing what a simple eye-liner can do for the eyes!  A properly applied eye-liner can make the eyes stand out more and define or even change their shape.  I can also teach you how to apply it properly for your eye shape during a Makeup Lesson.  I used to never leave the house without my eye-liner on.  Now I have really embraced a no liner look (mostly due to laziness and lack of time) and reserve applying liquid liner for a night out.

Let’s get to the juicy parts – how to achieve this look.

Makeup Look #2 Day Date, pretty makeup, glowy skin, pink lips, winged eyeliner, natural makeup, makeup artist, girl going to a date

HOW TO

SKIN

Start with hydrated base.  The foundation will go on better and will become one with your skin if it’s freshly moisturized.  Always go for the most natural looking foundation, or you can try a BB or CC cream or a tinted moisturizer.  The options are endless.  Natural light is especially unforgiving to foundation mistakes, that’s why my vote is for the one that looks like your skin.  You are just perfecting, not covering it.

EYES

Use a primer on the eyes to make sure that your liner won’t smudge and stay on well throughout the date.  Even the most long-wearing eye-liner will start smudging after coming in contact with skin oils.  Everybody is prone to oily eyelids, even people with dry skin.  It’s that kind of a place that will always get greasy; hence the dreaded women foe – eye-shadow creasing.  Swipe a light colour eye-shadow with a bit of shimmer to brighten the eyes and set the primer even more.  Curl your lashes.  Now you are ready for the eye-liner, which has it’s own big technique section below.  Put lots of mascara on and groom your brows.

LIPS

Find the pretties light pink shade of lipstick that has a glossy finish to it to make your lips look plump.   Finish with putting colour on your cheeks in a soft pink blush that matches your lipstick colour for that really girlie barely there flush.

TECHNIQUE TIP – EYELINER

If you haven’t mastered the eyeliner – don’t despair.  It’s not easy, especially for certain eye-shapes and it takes practice.  It really is all about the practice.  Like with everything, the more you do it, the better you become at it.  I still much prefer to do an eye-liner on somebody else then on myself.  Also, there are different products you can use to do eye-liner.  This tip is about the most challenging, but one with the biggest impact – liquid liner.  I think I found the most perfect liquid eye-liner out there for now – find out which one in my list of key products below.  Find the one that works for you, it might be half of the issue if you are struggling with your liquid liner.  A lot depends on what kind of brush it has and how the liquid dries.

Flawless1-14

I usually do the base along the lash line first – a very thin one and try to get as close to the lash line as possible.  My pet peeve is when I can see the gap between the lashes and the liner, which draws attention to the poor eye-makeup execution, instead of the eye.   I was never able to do the line in one beautiful swoop.  It’s much easier to draw in short strokes holding and pressing the liner so that you are using almost the side of it, not the very tip.

Now draw the flick starting from the outer corner aiming towards the temples.  To find a perfect angle of the flick imagine as if you were lining the bottom lash line and extending it pass the outer corner in it’s natural trajectory.  I hope that makes sense.  This angle will give you just the right amount of flick upwards without making it look too retro but giving a nice lift to the eye.  That’s the part that adds that playful element to the Day Date look.

Do start with the eye that’s harder for you to do, because it’s easier to match your stronger eye.  For example, I’m right-handed, so it’s harder for me to do my left eye, so I start with this one.  When matching the flick on the other side, tilt your head back slightly looking straight in the mirror  – this way you will see the angle of your liner better.

After you have the base of the liner and the flick, go over the top to build a desired thickness, which in this case is not very much.  I started the liner just shy of the inner corner not to make it too dramatic looking and thickened gradually towards the end.

Whew, you are done!  You can have a glass of wine now (helpful to calm the nerves before a date and congratulate yourself on the eye-liner job well done).   A few other helpful tips: keep your hand leaning on something for better balance and to control the shakiness and blink in between the eyeliner strokes to avoid blinking right as you are doing it.  With liquid liner you have to work a bit faster because if you do too many back and forth the first layers might start to lift and crumble.

I will also be posting a short video of this technique on my Instagram @KlavaZ.makeup.

PRODUCTS

Here are the key products I used to achieve this look:

Flawless1-18

MAC Vanilla pigment.  Probably one of the most used pigment by makeup artists.  A pigment is a concentrated loose colour powder that can be used for a wash of colour or a more intense look, especially if used damp.  This is an ivory white colour with a soft golden sheen.  It’s also one of those multi-tasking products that can be used anywhere.  Looks pretty as a highlighter on cheeks or mixed in the foundation for a more radiant finish or mixed in the lipgloss for extra sparkle.

Chantecaille Lip Chic in Primrose.  My idea of a perfect soft cool tone pink that’s not too pale.  This is a youthful light pink rose colour with a shiny gloss-like finish that doesn’t feel sticky.  I love the fact that it is infused with collagen making the looks appear plumper and smoother and has no parabens (always a plus in my books).  The colour intensity is medium and feels lightweight and soft on the lips.

Kat Von D Tatto Liner.  This is my Holy Grail of liquid liners and I have tried many!  It has the smartest brush tip shaped like a felt tip but with much more flexibility.  Just the right amount of springy flexibility so that it draws exactly where you want it, instead of flopping around or being too stiff.  The bristles come together into a very sharp point for those thin precise lines.  On top of a brilliant brush design it is highly pigmented and has a long wear formula that is waterproof and transfer-resistant.  Usually no liner can stand unsmudged against my very oily skin by mid day, but this one stayed on all day and only started to show signs of transfer by the end of it.  The formula glides on smooth and dries fast.

MAC Brush #228.  A mini shader that is perfect for more precise eye-shadow work or for those with smaller eyes.   It’s small, flat dome-shaped brush that is fairly firm with a rounded edge.   I actually used it to apply and smudge the powder eye-liner in the night time version of this look.  It’s great for lower lash line smokey eye-liner application.

MAC Well Dressed Blush.  It is described on MAC website as an Immaculate Pink. It has a very soft pink cool tone colour with a slight satin finish and looks like you have been kissed by a pink fluffy cloud.  It’s a great blush for fair skin toned but might be too subtle on somebody darker.  The texture is smooth and blends nicely.

NIGHT TIME VERSION OF THE LOOK

Flawless-20

Say your date went longer then anticipated (which is generally a good thing) or you are going out with girls after (to share the details of the day) and you are now in the evening territory.  All you need to have with you is a dark grey eyeshadow and a brush to get yourself ready for darker lighting with a bit more oomph on the eyes.  Go over the top liner with a small brush dipped in a darker shadow making it thicker and smoky.   Line the bottom lash line also smudging the liner as you go along.  Finish by blending a bit of the same colour in the outer corner crease in a classic V shape about one third of the way into the crease.  This soft smokiness around the eyes adds instant sexiness and mystery.   Just don’t go too heavy so that your makeup looks drastically different.

One other important thing – smile.  Goes a long way on a date or anywhere, really.  Audrey Hepburn knew what she was talking about saying that happy girls are the prettiest!

Let me know how it goes with this makeup look!  You can post your version of Day Date Look #2 here or on Instagram with a tag #EffortlessbyKlavaZ.  I would love to see how you did it!  And don’t be shy to ask questions!  I also do private lessons and group masterclasses, so if you are in Ottawa and would like to become a pro at your own makeup, check out my Educating page.
